Chester, NJ passed away on February 16, 2010. He was born on October 22, 1914 in Elizabeth, NJ. He has lived in Chester since 1949. Melvin was a Teacher and Assistant Principal in the East Orange School system. After his retirement he drove a school bus for students in Morris County on Field Trips and Athletic games for over 20 years. Melvin was a full time board member of Pleasant Hill Cemetery from 1984-2008. He received his Masters in Administration and Educational Supervision from Teachers College Columbia University, NY. Melvin served in the U.S. Air Force as a Special Agent for Counter Intelligence Corps. He is survived by his wife, Jane M. Whiting and his daughter, Melanie Whiting. He was predeceased by his son Kevin A. Whiting.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Whiting family and friends. I have fond memories of him driving the bus with a smile on his face and greeting us with lollipops after the game. He was always so kind and patient. May he rest in peace.

I met Mel when I joined the Board of Trustees for PHC. My initial thought which never faltered was that Mel was a true gentleman with wisdom and knowledge acquired through experience not just books. He will be missed.
