Carolyn McKeon Cleary, 100, formerly of Butler, NJ passed away on April 13, 2018 in Morris Plains, NJ. Carolyn was born in Butler, NJ on January 23, 1918 to Martin J. McKeon, Jr. and Sarah (Luker) McKeon. Carolyn attended St. Anthony’s Elementary School, Butler High School and, was a graduate of Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY. In 1940, Carolyn married Thomas J. Cleary and they became parents of five children. Carolyn and Tom were lifelong residents of Butler and enjoyed a loving marriage of 59 years until Tom’s death in 1999.
As her young family grew, Carolyn participated in the Butler Garden Club and activities at St. Anthony’s Church. During these years, Carolyn and Tom were so supportive of the Franciscan Parish and Monastery of St. Anthony’s that they received the honor of being affiliates of the Franciscan Order. Later, she became a devoted volunteer at St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville, NJ, amassing more than 2500 volunteer hours.
Carolyn possessed a strong, deep faith and was a loving wife, mother, and daughter. She cared daily for both of her parents during their prolonged illnesses. Later in her life, she cared for her husband, Tom, during his battle with dementia and Parkinson’s Disease. In addition to caring for her parents and husband, she relished her role as a grandmother; and, made numerous trips to visit her children, grandchildren as well as, welcoming them at her home in Butler.
All of the grandchildren and the older great grandchildren have wonderful memories of times spent riding the famous swing in the backyard, swimming in the pool, having picnics and cook-outs at “93”. In addition, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will remember her for her love of baking them chocolate chip cookies, watching NFL football, and ice skating.
Carolyn is survived by her five children: Thomas J. Cleary, Jr. (Andrea), Carolyne Odenwelder, Mary Satrom (Robert), Kevin Cleary, and Patrick Cleary (Kathleen). She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law Kathleen (Kevin) and, her granddaughter, Kelly Cleary. Carolyn also enjoyed her fourteen great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Carolyn’s Life will include a visitation on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 from 9:30am to 10:45am at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Butler, NJ followed by a 11am funeral mass. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Butler, NJ.
