John J. McDonough, III, 68, of Chester, NJ passed away on Friday, February 3, 2017. John was born on May 14, 1948 in NYC and grew up in Fort Lee NJ, spending most of his childhood playing stick ball, and sneaking into Palisades Amusement Park with his best friends Rich, Lou and Jack.
John graduated from Bergen Catholic High School in 1966. He then graduated University of Dayton majoring in accounting. He lived in Raymond, NH and West Boylston MA before settling in Chester NJ in 1990. He worked for IBM as a Project Manager before retiring in 2013 and became the Vice President of Anchor Staffing, East Brunswick NJ.
John was a 105mm Howitzer gunner with Co C 104th Engr Bn of the 50th Armored Div. As his family and friends can attest, his poor hearing reflected his time in the service and made his soft spoken daughter inaudible.
John was the Deputy Fire Chief for Ralston Engine Company of Mendham Twp for the past 15years. He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed, hiking with his dog, shooting, bike riding, gardening and swimming in the pool. John was an animal lover and loved his dog as if it were his third kid.
John is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kathy McDonough (nee O'Keefe), his daughter, Brenna, his son, Sean and wife Dawn, his grandchildren Brendan and Colleen, his sister in-law Heidi Brookins, beloved cousin Laura Cristaldi, his sister, Kathy Lew, his best friend Dr. Richard DeMarsico, who was like a brother, and his wife Kathy and their children, his large extended Irish/Italian family, and his beloved dog, Grady. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Margaret.
A Celebration of John's Life will include a memorial gathering from 9:30am to 10:30am on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at St. Luke Parish, 265 West Mill Road, Long Valley, NJ followed by a 11am funeral mass. Interment will be held privately by the family.
