Obituary of James Smith

James D. Smith, 91, of Long Valley, NJ passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2017. Jim was born on January 6, 1926 in Bloomfield, NJ. He has lived in Long Valley for the past 7 years and previously a 46-year resident of Chester Township. Jim was a Rutgers University graduate. He was a retired sales executive for 3M. Jim was a proud WWII Marine Corp veteran and Purple Heart recipient.

Jim was very active in the Chester community. He was a past commander of the American Legion of Chester for over a decade. Jim served Chester Township as a reserve and special police officer, a councilman, and Boy Scout Troop 139 Leader. He also was a member of the Marine Corps League and the Freemasons. Jim was a man of faith, a member of the Fairmount Presbyterian Church and sang in their choir. Jim enjoyed gardening, sports, and hunting.

Jim is survived by his wife, June Smith (nee Benson), his children, Jeffrey D. Smith and wife Sandra and Susan Kratch and husband John, his sister, Margaret Lord, his daughter-in-law, Megan Smith, 11 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Scott A. Smith.

A Celebration of Jim's life will include a visitation from 5pm to 8pm on Monday, July 31, 2017 at William J. Leber Funeral Home, 15 Furnace Road (Corner of Rt. 206), Chester, NJ (908) 879-3090. A 10am funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 1 at Fairmount Presbyterian Church in Califon, NJ. Interment will be held privately by the family.
