Henry John Fastert, Jr.

Henry John Fastert, Jr., 68, of Budd Lake, NJ, passed away on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at Morristown Medical Center. Henry was born on November 27, 1950, in Glen Ridge, NJ, to the late Henry John Fastert and Alba C. (Leo) Fastert. He grew up in Bloomfield, NJ. After marrying the love of his life, Patricia (Ruane) Fastert, they settled in Budd Lake in 1976.

Henry was very active in the community: coaching youth sports, serving as Vice Chairman on the Mount Olive Planning Board and Environmental Committee, and serving as a member of the Republican County Committee in Morris County. Additionally, he was an expert military historian, avid basketball player, parishioner of St. Jude Parish, and longtime New York Yankees fan. His knowledge of history and engineering abilities allowed him to assist in the restorations of the USS Intrepid and USS Growler to their respective former glories.

Henry started his career and worked for many years as a Chemical Engineer at Merck & Co. It was at Merck where Henry showed interest and aptitude in the nascent field of computer automation and its application to pharmaceuticals. He transitioned to Hewlett Packard where he developed various techniques around computer-integrated manufacturing which grew into a stellar career in Information Technology and Systems Infrastructure. He recently retired from his position as Chief Technologist and Managing Partner at SHI International Corporation, where he became a forefather and significant developer of cloud computing technology.

After his retirement, Henry was able to concentrate on his two passions: a lifelong love of cars, specifically restoring and building sports/muscle cars, and his grandchildren and great nieces and nephews. During his younger years, Henry was a talented racecar driver and racing engineer. He won enough races to purchase his wife's engagement ring and put himself through college. He loved restoring and collecting cars and owned and restored several Corvettes throughout the years.

More than anything, though, Henry loved his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Patricia (Ruane) Fastert of Budd Lake; devoted son, Michael Fastert and his wife Margaret (Harbin) Fastert of New York, New York; two cherished grandchildren, Rebecca Ruane Fastert (5) and Henry Harbin Fastert (2); brother, Theodore Fastert and his wife Cynthia of Castle Rock, Colorado; and by many other loving family members, friends, and colleagues.
