William K. McCormick, 81, of Chester, NJ, after a lengthy illness, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 3, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born on August 18, 1938 in Rockville Centre, NY and grew up in Merrick on Long Island. Bill lived in North Massapequa and Brightwaters on Long Island before moving to Chester in 1979. He attended St. Agnes High School in Rockville Centre, where he met his wife Jeanne. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1960, participating in the Fighting Irish Battalion of the Army ROTC program on campus, and then serving in the US Army after graduation. After completing a tour of active duty, Bill stayed in the Army Reserves, earning the rank of Captain before he retired. Bill worked for AT&T in Basking Ridge as a District Manager in charge of Network Engineering and Operations. He was awarded two US Patents that dealt with the automation of directory assistance services. He retired after 39 years.
Bill was a kidney donor, along with his wife Jeanne, for their daughter, Theresa in the early days of organ transplants. He served as the New York Chapter president of the National Kidney Foundation in the 1970s, supporting efforts in research, organ donation and home dialysis programs.
Bill was a devoted member of the parish at St. Lawrence the Martyr Church in Chester, NJ, volunteering, coordinating or participating in various programs and ministries. He was a volunteer staff assistant and eventually served as the Business Manager of the Church for many years. He also was a Eucharistic Minister. For almost twenty years of volunteer service at St. Lawrence, both he and his wife Jeanne were presented the Vivere Christus Est Award by Bishop Arthur Serratelli. Bill was also a member of the Men’s Cornerstone Ministry, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #5410 in Chester, and a member of the Chester Twp. Planning Board. He also devoted his time to the Bethlehem Hermitage in Chester, working on various maintenance and other special projects.
Being a Notre Dame alumnus, Bill was a lifelong fan of the Fighting Irish, as well as a devoted fan of the NY Yankees. He was collector of “rare antiquities,” qualifying him as an avid recycler. He enjoyed traveling and cruising with his wife Jeanne, family and friends. Most importantly, he loved his family, was a good friend to many, and he will be truly missed by all those who knew him.
Bill is survived by his children, Beth McCormick, Jeanne Gormley, Patricia McCormick and Maureen McCormick, his brother J. Burke McCormick, and grandchildren Erin Johnson and Heather Gormley. He was predeceased by his wife Jeanne in 2018, his children William Jr. and Theresa, his mother Helen Smith, his father Raymond D. McCormick, stepmother Miriam L. McCormick, and his brother Raymond S. McCormick.
A Celebration of Bill’s Life will include a visitation from 3pm to 7pm on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at the William J. Leber Funeral Home, 15 Furnace Road (corner of Rt. 206), Chester, NJ (908) 879-3090. An 11am Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Thursday, November 7th at St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish in Chester, NJ. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Chester.
