Peg's Celebration of Life
Obituary of Margaret "Peggie" Bell (Brown) Torelli
Stanhope, NJ – Peggie Bell (Brown) Torelli passed away quietly on February 7, family at her side, in her Stanhope, NJ home. Her 68-year journey here on earth was filled with incredible joy that she either found or created and generously spread among her family and friends. Starting as a toddler, Peg confronted life and every encounter with a super-sized heart that brimmed with love and, in the end, faced her terminal cancer with uncommon courage and grit. Her soul mate in life, husband Joe Torelli, was with her at her passing, conveying unreserved love and devotion as he has for the last 17 years, the happiest ones of her life.
A native of Wilmington, DE, Peg graduated from A.I. DuPont High School in 1967 where she sang in the A Capella Choir, was on Student Council and Choir Council and played varsity basketball. A group of her A.I. classmates became life-long friends, their annual get-togethers in Rehoboth Beach, the stuff of legend. Peg also enjoyed horseback riding as a teen. After high school, Peg attended Penn Hall in Chambersburg, PA where she captained the basketball team and graduated in 1969, leaving to pursue her career in New York City. Later, Peg was blessed with three children who became the focus of her life and the recipients of her abundant love and devotion as she continued her work life in Long Valley, NJ. When she became a grandmother, nothing could keep her from doting on her four precious grandchildren who became the joyous center of all she did. Clearly, this was Peg’s greater purpose.
Peg was predeceased by her parents, Werner and “Bucie” Brown, and by her brother Curt Brown, 1st Lt. Army Infantry, who died in combat in Vietnam in 1968. She is survived by her devoted husband, Joe, and by her beloved children from her first marriage, Alison Wagner (Jeff) of Whitefish Bay, WI, Curt Hayes of Basking Ridge, NJ, and Brian Hayes (John) of Norfolk, England. She is also survived by her treasured grandchildren, Brendan, Julia, Madison, and Olivia, by Joe’s sister, Carol, and by her siblings, David Brown (Gwen) of Wilmington, DE, Steve Brown (Kathy) of Atlanta, GA, Matt Brown (Beth) of Wilmington, DE, Alice Barger (Gene) of Atlanta, GA and Richard Brown (Claudia) of Columbia, SC, all of whom cherish two magical weeks with her in September, traveling in Europe and down the Danube. Peg was blessed in her illness with skilled and compassionate caregivers, including Dr. Darlene Gibbon and her nurses from Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice.
A Celebration of Peg’s Life will be held at Leber Funeral Home, 15 Furnace Road. Chester, NJ 07930 from 12-3:30pm on Tues. Feb. 13, 2018.
