Obituary of Jeanne McCormick
Jeanne McCormick, 79, of Chester, NJ passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, March 22, 2018. Jeanne was born on October 2, 1938 in Brooklyn and grew up in Rockville Centre on Long Island. She raised six children in Brightwaters, NY, where she was a Girl Scout leader for many years. Jeanne has lived in Chester for the past 39 years, where she was an active member of the community. Jeanne attended St. Agnes High School in Rockville Centre, where she met her husband, Bill, and graduated from Trinity College in Washington, DC in 1960. After more than 20 years, she retired from NJ Bell/Bell Atlantic .
Jeanne was a kidney donor to her daughter, Theresa, in the early days of organ transplants. She was an active member of the Kidney Foundation for many years supporting organ donation and home dialysis programs.
Jeanne was a member and Trustee of St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish in Chester and was extremely active in the church community. She was an RCIA, Bible Study, Adult Religious Education Coordinator; a Eucharistic Minister; and a volunteer staff assistant at St. Lawrence for many years. Jeanne was also one of the founders of the St. Lawrence Women’s Cornerstone Ministry and started the church’s Media Ministry using large TV screens which coordinated the use of new technology to help parishioners follow the prayers and hymnals during the celebration of the Eucharist. For her years of volunteer service at St. Lawrence, both she and husband Bill were presented the Vivere Christus Est Award by Bishop Arthur Serratelli several years ago.
Jeanne had a great fondness for mystery novels and enjoyed crossword challenges and jigsaw puzzles. She loved crafting and would crochet and sew quilts and clothing for her family and friends, and most recently, started making and donating hats and scarves to patients undergoing chemotherapy at the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center in Morristown, NJ. Jeanne enjoyed planning and going on vacations and cruises with family and friends. She was a great hostess, and enjoyed arranging family dinners and neighborhood parties during the holidays and summer months.
Jeanne is survived by her husband, William K. McCormick; her children, Beth McCormick, Jeanne (McCormick) Gormley, Maureen McCormick, and Patricia McCormick; her brothers, Joseph McLaughlin, Jerrold McLaughlin, James McLaughlin, Jeffrey McLaughlin, her sister, Judith McLaughlin; and grandchildren, Erin Johnson and Heather Gormley. She was predeceased by her children, William Jr. and Theresa, and her brother, John Jr.
A Celebration of Jeanne’s Life will include a visitation from 3pm to 7pm on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at the William J. Leber Funeral Home, 15 Furnace Road (corner of Rt. 206), Chester, NJ (908) 879-3090. An 11am Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 28th at St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish in Chester, NJ. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Chester.
