Obituary of Norman Metz

Norman George Metz of Flanders, NJ passed away on May 27, 2018 at the age of 95. Norman was born June 29, 1922 in the Bronx, NY. The idyllic chapters of his childhood were spent on the water fishing. Fishing would become his favorite pastime. He honorably served in World War II under General George S. Patton at the Battle of the Bulge. Norman went on to build a prosperous life in Fanwood, NJ with his beloved wife of 63 years, Margaret (Keane) Metz. Norman’s career spanned several decades as a draftsman for Elson T. Killam Associates, Inc.

He took pride in the precision of his work. This trait carried over in all that he did: manicuring his lawn, maple tree and roses, carpentry, puzzles and more artistic endeavors such as pottery-making and coloring. He traveled the world and gave back in dutiful service to the food pantry of his Catholic parish. But above all else, Norman was a family man. It was there he gave the most. He instilled a lust for life, familial sense of duty, a creative curiosity and love for all things chocolate in those closest to him. He is survived and sorely missed by his devoted wife, six children, thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Norman’s life will include a visitation on Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 9:30am to 11:30am at the William J. Leber Funeral Home, 15 Furnace Road (Corner of Rt. 206), Chester, NJ (908) 879-3090 followed by a 12pm funeral mass at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Flanders, NJ.  Interment will follow at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, Basking Ridge, NJ.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Attn: Food Pantry, 1571 South Martine Avenue, Scotch Plains, New Jersey 07076.
