Lt. Allen Gearhart Castner
Allen Gearhart Castner of Pittstown, NJ passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 4, 2018. He was 97 years old.
He was born on April 25, 1921 in Washington, NJ to Carl W. Castner and Georgia G. Castner. He graduated from Washington High School and at the outbreak of World War II he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was trained in Texas as a B-17 Bomber pilot and was a member of the 388th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force. Mr. Castner became a First Lieutenant and was stationed in Thetford, England. He piloted 25 combat missions over Europe. He was highly decorated and received the Distinguished Flying Cross (with Oak Leaf Cluster), the Air Medal, and many other service ribbons.
Upon returning to civilian life, he graduated from Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey). Much of his career was spent in education. He was a teacher at Holland Township School and later an Educational Consultant with Educational Development Labs. He was civically active and was a founding member of the Quakertown Volunteer Fire Department and later served as its Chief. He also served as President of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, President of the Alexandria Township Board of Education, and the President of the Alexandria Civic Association. He was an avid reader, enjoyed golf, and was a master woodworker. He was a talented amateur photographer and won many awards.
Mr. Castner was pre-deceased by his wife, Dr. Alice Z. Castner in 2011. He was also pre-deceased by his sister, Betty Lou Piagesi, and his brother, Carl Castner.
Surviving him are his son, Allen Castner (Erin) of Vero Beach, Florida and two daughters, Leslie Krueger (Keith) of Manahawkin, NJ and Lisa Kendzulak (Joseph) of Flemington, NJ. Also surviving him are seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren whom he adored and who adored him.
The family is planning a private graveside service.
