Obituary of David Edward Weir

David (Dave) Edward Weir passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 30th in Christiansted, St. Croix, at the age of 73 years. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Maureen Dower Weir, his children, Cherie (Stephen) Shefferman, David (Courtney), and Jennifer (Gregory Fidler), his four grandchildren, Emily, Raya, Grant, and Allison, and his three siblings, Michael (Becki), Kevin (Carol), and Elaine (Joseph - deceased) Daidone. He also leaves behind a very spoiled dog named Patton.

Dave was born on February 13, 1945 in Teaneck, NJ, to William and Edna Weir. He attended his freshman year of high school at Don Bosco High School in Ramsey, NJ, and the remainder of his high school years at Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, PA, from where he graduated cum laude in 1963. While at Mercersburg, he was a member of the Irving Society, the Student Council, the Latin Club, and the Varsity Club. He was also captain of the Cross-Country Team and co-captain of the Track Team, earning several varsity letters in each.

Dave attended Princeton University from 1963 – 1967 as a Navy ROTC Cadet (Marine Corps Option) and full scholarship recipient. He also participated in the Princeton University Bridge Club and was chosen to represent Princeton’s Intercollegiate Bridge Team in his senior year. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering in 1967, then entered the United States Marine Corps as a commissioned officer. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat Valor for heroic achievement during the Vietnam War as a Platoon Commander with Company “D,” First Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade.  After returning from Vietnam, he served as an OCS Instructor in San Diego, CA, and in Quantico, VA. He was honorably discharged in 1973 at the rank of Captain, then began an actuarial career, from which he retired in 2014. Dave married Maureen Claire Dower on May 9, 1980 in North Brunswick, New Jersey.

An avid sailor, Dave belonged to Great Oak Yacht Club in Chestertown, MD, and previously Raritan Yacht Club in Perth Amboy, NJ. He enjoyed participating in races, especially the biennial Marion to Bermuda Race. During the first half of his life, he was passionate about Bridge; the American Contract Bridge League awarded him the honor of Life Master in 1974. He also enjoyed Classical and Jazz music, skiing, running, and travel. He was a member of Our Lady of the Mountain parish, where he attended Mass every Sunday.

Visitation will be held at William J. Leber Funeral Home in Chester, NJ, on Sunday, February 10, from 2pm to 5pm; starting at 3:30, those who wish to do so will be invited to share thoughts and memories. A funeral Mass will be held at 11am on Monday, February 11 at Our Lady of the Mountain Church in Long Valley, NJ, with repast to follow at the same location.
