Obituary of John H. Bretherick, Jr.

John H. Bretherick, Jr., 89, of Basking Ridge, NJ, formerly of Chester, NJ passed away peacefully on Friday March 22, 2019 at home surrounded by his family. John was born on December 24, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA to the late John H. Bretherick and Mary (Steinmetz) Bretherick. After attending Olney High School, John served in the United States Army and later attended Temple University. John was a widely respected insurance executive, serving as President of Continental Insurance, and as a Board member of GEICO, the Insurance Information Institute and MBIA. He also was past president of the Greater New York Council of Boy Scouts. John was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Mendham, NJ. John loved playing golf, and was a past member of both Wildwood Country Club, and the Mendham Golf & Tennis Club. In addition to golf, he enjoyed playing bridge, flying, fishing, boating and trying to play the banjo.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years Roseanne (Smith) Bretherick; three children, Lisa, Steve (Keiko), and Audrey Melofchik (Jeff); grandsons Connor and Tyler; and by many other loving family members and friends.

John's Life Celebration will include a visitation on Monday March 25, 2019 from 4pm-7pm at the William J. Leber Funeral Home (908) 879-3090, 15 Furnace Road (corner of Rt. 206), Chester, NJ 07930. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday March 26, 2019 at 11am at Grace Lutheran Church in Mendham. Entombment will follow at Somerset Hills Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Basking Ridge, NJ.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 65 East Main Street, Mendham, NJ 07945 or to the Interfaith Food Pantry, 2 Executive Drive, Morris Plains, NJ 07950.
