Obituary of Judson W. Crawford

Dr. Judson William Crawford, formerly of Morris Township, NJ

Born in Des Moines Iowa in 1942 to Judson B. and Thelma G. Crawford, Judson also lived and worked in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Kansas, the Philippines, and Thailand. Dr. Crawford received his B.S. with High Honors in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University, and his Masters and PhD in Operations Research Management from Johns Hopkins University where he studied as a Bell Laboratories Fellows. He was a member of the American Pioneers of Telephone & AT&T Pioneers. He worked for Bell Laboratories, AT&T Long Lines, Lockheed Martin, Sprint, and as an UN International Telecommunication Union consultant for the United Nations World Bank Development Program in Asia. His work included models for Apollo missions, defense missile programs, and high security naval submarine missions including a data compression algorithm for tracking nuclear submarines. He is credited with developing the network algorithm for the Mother's Day Project, the busiest telephone call day of the year. During the Congressional divestiture proceedings for the Bell System, he testified before Congress as an expert in an attempt to keep one telephone system intact. While in the Philippines he worked under the Marcos Administration to develop a modern telecommunications infrastructure for the country. He was a former member of the United Methodist Church of Morristown and Hackettstown. He served as a school board member for the Morris School District when the merger of Morristown and Morris Township was implemented in the 1970s. He helped to coordinate funding of the Head Start Program space at the United Methodist Church in Morristown, a precursor to the center now known as Children on the Green. After his stroke he published a technical book Stochastic Network Flows and Markov Decision Processes which included Game Theory applications.

He is survived by his brother, Ralph Crawford of Ankeny, IA and his sister, Linda Powell of Bristol, IN; 5 children & 9 grandchildren: Richard &Martha Crawford of Yarmouth, Maine; Karen & Daniel Roup of Medina, OH; Lisa & Jerry Cash of Belmont, NC; Judson Crawford of Denville, NJ, Julie Crawford & Catherine Segal of Chester, NJ. Grandchildren Molly, Caitlin, Shannon, Wesley, Patrick, Matthew, Hunter, Robert, & Tyler. His wife, Mary Jo Peterson Crawford passed in 2013 due to complications of MDS, a blood disorder. A private memorial service will be held this summer.
