Obituary of Sister Raffeline Nativity Pedecine

Sister Raffeline Nativity Pedecine, 98, of Chester, New Jersey, passed peacefully into the eternal embrace of her Heavenly Father on Gaudete Sunday, December 15, 2019. Sister was born on January 12, 1921 in Benevento, Italy, to Thomas and Antonia Pedecine. The young family migrated to America in August 1922 and settled in Milburn, New Jersey. Her mother died when she was four years old. She and her younger brother, Tom, stayed in a home for children in Summit until her father remarried. Once more they settled in Milburn and Sister attended public school there. Sister first felt the call to religious life when she saw the movie, “The White Sister”. On August 6, 1940 she entered the Contemplatives of the Good Shepherd in Morristown and she made her profession on July 22, 1943. Hers was a life of prayer and hard work but she persevered until she entered the Hermits of Bethlehem in 1987. She became a citizen of the United States on December 6, 1971. She first came to Bethlehem Hermitage in 1981, in residence in order to discern a possible vocation to the Hermits of Carmel next door to Bethlehem. She returned to her community in 1982, but in 1983 at the invitation of Father Eugene Romano, the founder of Bethlehem Hermitage, she returned as part of a newly formed community. After that did not work out, Sister returned to her community. In the mid 80’s Father Romano was in the process of forming the laura of hermits and Sister finally had her dream come true when she entered the laura on December 27, 1987. What joy to live in the silence and solitude of Bethlehem! She received the habit on March 25, 1988 and became a professed hermit on September 8, 1990. Sister was the sacristan, as she was with the Good Shepherd Sisters, up until 8 years ago but she was always ready to help out when a need arose. She participated fully in our liturgical life even up to the day she had her stroke, December 2, 2019. May she rest in the Heart of Jesus for all eternity! She is survived by her three sisters, Gloria Schrama. Concetta Consales, and Clare Botte; nieces and nephews, Thomas Pedecine, Toni Pedecine, Raphael Pedecine, Donald Schrama, William Schrama, Mary Anne Angelini, Thomas Botte, James Botte, Judith Consales, Richard Consales, and Christopher Consales. She was predeceased by her parents; stepmother, Mary Grace Pedecine; and by her brother, Thomas Pedecine, Jr. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in the Chapel at Bethlehem Hermitage on Friday, December 20, 2019. Bishop Serrateli will preside. Visitation will also be in the Chapel on Thursday, December 19, 2019 from 3 to 7PM. Interment will be in the Cemetery of the Parousia at Bethlehem Hermitage.
