Obituary of Norman W Menz

Norman W. Menz, Jr., 73, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 1. A Mass will be offered at The Hermits of Carmel, 80 Pleasant Hill Road, Chester NJ on Tuesday, January 7, at 12:30 p.m. Visiting is on Monday, January 6, from 3 to 7 p.m. at William J. Leber Funeral Home, 15 Furnace Road, Chester NJ. Born in Jersey City, Norman was the son of the late Marjorie (Jennings) Menz and Norman W. Menz. He is survived by his wife, Rita (Finn) Menz, daughters Leslie Laiuppa (Michael), Meredith Eyre (Allan) and Catherine Mollitor (Joseph), his son, Norman III (Michelle), brother Wayne (Donna), nine grandchildren Jonathan, Kyra and Caelyn Laiuppa; Emma, Hannah and Leyna Menz; McKenna and Rebecca Eyre; and Oliver Mollitor. Norman was predeceased by his parents, and his brother Eugene. After a 35-year career with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, Norman retired in 2006 as Chief Assistant Prosecutor/Deputy First Assistant Prosecutor, a position he held from 1994. He was responsible, at different times, for the supervision of the special investigative units of the office, including Homicide, Cold Case Unit, Vehicular Homicide Unit, Crime Scene Unit, Citizen's Complaint, Sexual Assault and Rape Analysis Unit, Narcotics Enforcement Office, Official Corruption and Economic Crime Unit, Arson Squad, Special Investigations Unit, Major Criminal Investigations and Welfare Fraud Unit. From 1974 to 1994 Norman served as Director of the Homicide Investigation Section. He was appointed to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office in 1971 as an Assistant Prosecutor assigned to the trial section. From 1994 to 1999, Norman was the President of the Assistant Prosecutors Association of New Jersey. In 2005, he received the Career Advocacy Award from the Prosecutors' Association of New Jersey. In 1999, he received a Certificate of Appreciation Award from the NY/NJ Regional Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force for "Outstanding Work" on a particular case. From 2013 to 2019 he was an Adjunct Professor at Caldwell University. Norman is a graduate of Loyola Academy, Wilmette, IL, Loyola University of Chicago and Loyola University School of Law, Chicago. He was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in New Jersey in 1971.
