Obituary of Henry E. Hamel, Jr.

Mr. Henry E. Hamel, Jr., (86), most recently of Chester, NJ, entered into eternal life on Sunday, April 5, 2020. Henry was born in Boston, MA on July 3, 1933, to Henry (Sr) and Mary Agnes (nee O'Donnell) Hamel. He was raised in Belmont, MA, and graduated from Belmont High School in 1951. Henry attended Harvard University, where he also played on the varsity baseball team. After graduating from Harvard in 1955, Henry enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served for two years, separating from the Army in 1957 at the rank of E-4. Following his stint in the service, he attended Harvard Business School, graduating in 1959 with a Masters of Business Administration degree. After business school, Henry moved to New York City where he began his 32-year career in the pharmaceutical industry, the majority of which was spent with Pfizer, Inc. In 1960, he married Joan Kiernan, and began a six-decade partnership which endured until his death. Henry & Joan raised their six children in South Orange, NJ, Miami, FL, Tokyo, Japan, Hong Kong, China, and finally back to New Jersey in 1981. Upon retiring from Pfizer, Henry & Joan moved to Naples, FL, where they enjoyed sixteen years of "snow bird" life, splitting their time between Naples, FL and Chester, NJ. They finally returned to New Jersey, full time, in 2011, to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Henry was preceded in death by his parents, and his three older brothers, John, William, and Raymond. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan, and their six children. He is also survived by eight loving grandchildren: Kiernan (Gabriel) and Christopher Macdonald, Henry IV, Nicholas, and Peter Hamel, and Gretchen, Amelia, and Kiersten Albrecht. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a date yet to be determined.
