Mary Pompelio

Obituary of Mary C. Pompelio

Mary Catherine Pompelio was called home to the Lord on Monday, April 13, 2020 at the age of 96. Mary was born in Peapack-Gladstone on January 18, 1924 to the late Felicia (nee Soriano) and Frank Casendino. She was raised in a loving family of ten children, where compassion, respect and hard work became the foundation for each family member. Mary graduated from Bernardsville High School in June 1943, and two months later she married her only-ever sweetheart, Sylvester Pompelio on August 15, the day of the celebration of the Feast of Assumption. Within a week, her husband returned to the U.S. Army and the warfront in Europe, and Mary moved to live with her husband's family in Netcong at the home in which he was raised. During the time of World War II, while her husband was away, like so many young brides, Mary worked to support the war effort and her family, having worked at a plant that made bombs in nearby Califon. After her husband returned home from the War in 1946, they made their life together at his boyhood home in Netcong, N.J. Mary and Sylvester were blessed with two children, Richard in 1947 and Christina in 1951. With love and a spirit of kindness, they raised their children in Netcong and they were blessed to have each other until 1981, when Sylvester passed at the age of 58. Thereafter, Mary moved to Mt. Olive Township, where she lived her life doing what she enjoyed the most – loving and caring for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary was a true matriarch and ambassador of kindness, who requested little beyond seeing the happiness in others. Raised as a Roman Catholic, Mary possessed a deep religious faith. For many years prior to her passing, Mary was a communicant at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Flanders, N.J. She had a deep and close devotion to the Rosary and the Divine Mercy, and it was comforting for her family and friends to always know that in their difficult times, she was there praying with support and encouragement. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Sylvester in 1981 and her grandson, Tony Pompelio in 1989. She was also predeceased by her parents, Frank and Felicia Casendino; her siblings, Lucy Sansone, Carmen Casendino, James Casendino, Rocco Casendino, Margaret Gano, Joseph Casendino, Elizabeth Scali, Frank Casendino and Nancy Casendino; in addition to many beloved brothers and sister in laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Mary is survived by her children, Christina and Michael Romano, and Ann and Richard Pompelio; her grandchildren, Michael Joel Romano, Tara and Joey Simrany, Nicholas and Amanda Pompelio, Stevyn and Stephanie Pompelio, Katherine and Peter Bongiovanni and Connor Anthony Pompelio; and her great-grandchildren, Emily Mary Romano, Giovanni Richard Pompelio, Olivia Jade Simrany, Vincent Anthony Pompelio, Rocco Anthony Pompelio and Anthony James Bongiovanni. Visitation and funeral services will be held privately for the family for the safety of all. Interment will be held at Stanhope Union Cemetery. A full Memorial Liturgy of Christian Burial to celebrate Mary's life will be held at a later date to be announced. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of William J. Leber Funeral Home, Chester Township, N.J. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to the Tony Pompelio Scholarship Fund c/o Rpompelio@NJCrimeVictims.org.
