Obituary of Michael Christopher Byrnes

Michael Christopher Byrnes Born in Newark, NJ, on December 22, 1943, to the late Joseph F. Byrnes and Gladys Halley Byrnes. Michael grew up in Lafayette, NJ, and had lived in Flanders, NJ and Chicago, IL before moving to Succasunna in the mid-1990's. Michael is survived by his devoted daughter, Jacqueline Byrnes Poirier and son-in-law Andrew Poirier of Hopewell, NJ, and by his precious granddaughters, Stella Marion and Abigail Ellie, who he absolutely adored. Michael is also survived by his sisters, Carol Byrnes, Nokomis, FL, and Nancy O'Neil, Smithville, TN, and a loving extended family of nephews John-Eric and Dale Rudischhauser, Matthew and Patrick O'Neil and their families, niece Kimberly, and nephews Kevin and Tim Leonhardt and families. Michael was pre-deceased by his beloved son, Jason Michael Byrnes in 2007, and is survived by his previous wife, Christine Byrnes also of Hopewell. His long-time friendship with Ronnie Maxton and children John Maxton and Laurie Grafer adds to those of us whose lives he touched, and who sadly mourn his passing. Michael graduated from Newton High School in 1961 and was a graduate of LaSalle University in Philadelphia. He served in the National Guard from 1967 through 1974. Throughout his successful career employed out of college by AT&T and Bell Labs, retiring as CFO and Systems Analyst of The CIT Group based in Livingston, NJ. While he traveled the world extensively for his work, he most enjoyed time spent in England, the birthplace of his mother. Michael lived abroad in the picturesque town of Ascot for a time while working in the EU. He instilled a passion for travel in his daughter. Together they walked the streets of Florence, Italy, spent a week on his nephew's pontoon boat in Florida, and collected pint glasses from some of the oldest pubs in London while touring many of Europe's National Gardens located in London and throughout the Cotswolds. Michael was an avid golfer and a life-long Giants fan, often inviting his granddaughters to watch games together, while he recorded each to watch later knowing they would distract him from the action. With his daughter he shared an appreciation for photography, centuries-old woodworking tools, maps, books, locks and keys, and antique pistols. A gifted mechanic, he was happiest working on cars, both old and new. Always quick to share tools and advice with his son-in-law Andrew. With Andrew he also shared a love of nature, cultivating plants including roses, delicate Bonsai trees, and his collection of potted specimen shrubs and trees propagated from seeds. Michael most loved spending time with his family and was proudest of his role as "Pops". He would challenge his girls with mechanical building toys, microscopes and electricity kits to watch with pride as their little minds worked to complete each challenge. He celebrated every birthday, attended every school play and countless dance recitals. To him, the sun rose and set with his granddaughters. Never one to shy away from a challenge, be it painting his house or cleaning the chimney, Michael embodied the spirit of a true handyman. Michael is remembered by family and friends as a kind, big-hearted, funny and loving man with a firm handshake, honest with a strong moral compass. He was the best father and friend a girl could ask for. A private family service for Michael will be held as he is laid to rest beside his son, Jason.
