Obituary of Robert Charles Gebhardt

Robert Charles Gebhardt, 87, of Chester, NJ passed away peacefully on January 27, 2021 at home surrounded by his family. Bob was born on September 7, 1933 in Ann Arbor, MI to the late Paul and Ruth (Collins) Gebhardt. He resided in Hopatcong, NJ, for many years before moving to Chester. Bob was a brilliant man. He received a Bachelor†™s degree in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1953, a Master†™s degree in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1955 and a Master†™s degree in Mathematics from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1964. Bob did his post graduate work at the State University of New York from 1965-1967. He dedicated his life to teaching. Bob was a charter faculty member of the County College of Morris, with a career spanning over 50 years. He served as a Professor of Engineering, Mathematics and Astronomy from 1968-2010. In 2011, he was designated Faculty Emeritus. Bob†™s broad interests included classical and big band music, puzzles, reading, trains, church organs and the New York Times crosswords. Bob donated extensively to a variety of causes. One of his noteworthy projects was his coordination and collaboration with the architects in designing and developing the original CCM planetarium facility. He was an avid traveler, a passion he shared with his wife, Joan. Their favorite destination was Hawaii where they were married and have gathered with their family annually for over twenty years. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan R. Monaghan Gebhardt; three loving stepdaughters, Katherine McFadden and her husband Thomas, Jill Monaghan Barnes and her husband Gregory, and Nancy Monaghan Fischler and her husband Eric; five cherished grandchildren, Roark, Madeleine, Vivienne, Nicholas, and Simone; and by many other loving family members, friends, and colleagues. He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Gebhardt. Due to the current pandemic, Bob†™s services will be held privately by his immediate family. He will be laid to rest at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Chester. Since the committal service will take place outdoors, anyone wishing to attend should call the funeral home for further details. Also due to pandemic restrictions and limitations on public gatherings, the family has requested that any flowers or tokens of sympathy be expressed as donations to the Ruth Gebhardt Memorial Scholarship at the County College of Morris (reference "Ruth Gebhardt Memorial Scholarship" under "Add special instructions") For online condolences and additional information please visit leberfuneralhome.com
