Carol Coulthurst

Obituary of Carol B. Coulthurst

Carol Byrne Coulthurst of Denville, NJ, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2021. She was 83 years old. Born to the late Dayton and Grace Byrne, Carol grew up with her beloved brother Pete in Plainfield, NJ. Graduating from Plainfield High School in 1955, Carol spent a year studying nutrition at Hood College before her father's untimely death resulted in her leaving school to join the workforce. At a Thanksgiving Day football game in 1957, Carol met Larry Coulthurst, and they married a year later. After spending the first 14 years of their marriage in New Jersey, Carol and Larry sought fresh scenery. With Larry driving the moving truck, Carol packed her four "blessings" (ages 9, 7, 6, and 3) in their green and white VW bus and drove cross country to new adventures in the southwest. Eventually, they returned to New Jersey and made a home in Long Valley for 41 years. In 1980, Carol started her own title searching company, expanding the business from 1 client to over 20 before retiring from the demands of ownership. After a few memorable years as a searcher for other agencies, Carol became a librarian for a medical education company before retiring in 1999. A member of the Religious Society of Friends, Carol was committed to making the world a better place for all. She served on the NY Yearly Meeting's Nominating and Peace & Social Action committees, assisted families facing homelessness with FISH, delivered Meals on Wheels, and volunteered as an art teacher at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for 10 years. With humor, Carol credited her own lack of artistic ability with instantly putting students at ease. Carol cherished life's simple joys: tending her garden, observing wildlife in the yard, meeting with the Long Valley Women's Club, celebrating Thanksgiving, and sharing quality time with family and friends. Predeceased by Larry in December 2020, Carol is survived by her brother Pete and her children, Amy Surowitz and her husband Steve; LJ and his wife Juli; Dave and his wife Patti; and Bill and his wife Kim. She also leaves 9 well-loved grandchildren and 3 adored great-grandchildren, her brother-in-law John Coulthurst, and many nieces and nephews. To honor Carol, tell a loved one "3 nice things" about your day and remind them they are a blessing to you.
